James Marsters Interview (January 2008)
Best known as rock 'n' roll vampire Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, James Marsters is the latest addition to the cast of Torchwood. He plays Time Agent Captain John Hart, the dark reflection of John Barrowman's heroic Captain Jack.
Is Captain John American or English?
He's English. I come from the stage so you develop an accent for anything that you might be cast for, so I have a workable German, French, Russian. I have a fair Italian in my pocket too.
There's a joke in there somewhere… So, tell us about Captain John.
He's a doppelgänger for Captain Jack, which is to say that he's enough like the lead to shed new light on him. I am a Time Agent just like Captain Jack but unlike him I haven't reformed - I am not trying to dump my past and become a good person.
So I come to Earth fully thinking that Jack has got some scam going, that he's conning somebody, and I'm really impressed by the con because he's got so many toys. But he won't let me in on it and that p****s me off, frankly. I ultimately find out that it's not a con, that it's actually real, and I don't understand that. My basic job is to seduce Jack back to the dark side.
So you're the bad guy?
I'm very bad - I love it. I mean, they only let Spike [who Marsters played in Buffy the Vampire Slayer] be bad for three episodes, then they put him in a wheelchair and they took his teeth out and beat him on the head and made him wear a dress. John is just unrepentant evil which is so fun to play. Sociopaths are the best.
The jacket John wears looks slightly Adam Ant.
Hell, yeah! Basically, he's got a jacket from fighting in the Napoleonic wars. He's got a snakeskin sword from Korea that I think he had to kill someone for, his boots are from Italy circa 1640 and he's got gun holsters from the American West.
If you have a cool costume it all goes well. It affects you as an actor - you walk around, you feel cool.
Torchwood's a sexy show - everyone fancies everyone. Anyone John has his eye on?
John's a Time Agent and I understand Time Agents go for anything with a postal code, which is wonderful. So John's got his eye on everyone, including a poodle that he sees. Seriously, it's in the script - "Look at him/her; oh my god that's beautiful." "That's a poodle."
John's from the 51st century. What's futuristic about him?
Well, he has a different perspective with regards to sexuality. And a different perspective with regards to power and money.
When he talks about sexuality, it amazes him that people can only love one person. It just seems like a real waste. When he says he can make a lot of money, he's talking about enough money to buy a planet. And power - he's used to a level of power that Earthlings don't understand, and that leads… Well, if you have ruled or destroyed entire planets or tried to conquer a whole galaxy, then the workings of one planet seem a bit tame.
The role must be quite a laugh…?
Oh my God, dude, I'm having the time of my life! I don't think I've had this much fun on a set in my life, to tell you the truth.
Were you a fan of Doctor Who or Torchwood before you joined the show?
I knew Who from the '70s. I knew the fuzzy headed Who [Tom Baker] and loved him well. But I've moved around America all my life - California, New York, Chicago, Seattle - and [the show] does not get into all of those markets, so it was kind of hard.
In America only the really smart, cool people had the Doctor Who t-shirts, so if you see that - "Oh, I wanna talk to you". Also, artists, writers, they know Doctor Who. I was on a music tour about eight months ago and one of my tour managers, Lisa Power, said that she wouldn't go out to the bar with me after the show because Doctor Who was on, so if I wanted to hang out with her I had to bring my bottle up to the room, so I did.
About 15 minutes into the episode, I was convinced that I wanted to be on that show, so I called my manager, who was in the next room, and he called Russell [T Davies] and asked if there was any room for me on the show - and he said "No" [laughs]. But they said they would be willing to put me on Torchwood. And Lisa said, "Oh my God, I love Torchwood more than Doctor Who! Go on that!" My only real question was, is Russell T Davies producing this as well? They said "Yes". That was all I needed.
What was it like coming into an existing ensemble cast?
That's the point - they are a true ensemble cast, they support each other, they understand that their performance is dependent on everyone else's. So I was welcomed with open arms. I love the cast. There's no egos, man. There's nobody saying, "Look at me" or "I need more attention".
Eve [Myles, who plays Gwen Cooper] is God's gift. I have never worked with an actress who is that cool, that game for violence. We have quite a lot of physical stuff and, look, I'm used to Buffy Summers, man, so every time we did a stunt it was like, "Are you OK?" or "I actually touched you - oh my God!" And Eve was like, "Try to hurt me, pal. Bet you a pound you can't hurt me!" [laughs].
John Barrowman's a larger than life character on set, I believe…
The first day on the set I was a little taken aback (I have issues. I had a weird childhood) [laughs]. And he noticed that I was a little uncomfortable with how forward everyone was with each other. The first day he saw me kinda going, "Oh my God". And the second day we do a big fight scene and he's a totally different person - 'cos he knows that I am weak, basically, and scared, and he totally changes. He's my acting partner and he wants to know what I'm comfortable with, what I'm not comfortable with, and how we can protect each other during the day.
He is a natural born leader and he sees everything on the set, he notices everybody's mood and he acts in a way that helps. I felt safe with him. I felt like I had a true acting partner, 'cos we both come from the stage and we understand what that means.
But the dude's playing a Time Agent who will stick it into any hole he can find, so he's in character and that's what he's thinking. One day he drives up to the set in a big red sports car, gets out, looks at me and goes, "I just did that car. I just had her." And I'm in character too, so I'm like, "Well, she's winkin' at you. I'd do her too." He's like, "The gas cap, man, that's a nice hole." I'm like, "She's winkin' at me now too, I might have to take your lady. Can I have her?" "Yeah." "Nah, I already had her." [laughs] They took the freaky Yank and they broke him in!
You and John are both musical as well. Any collaborations in the pipeline?
I'd love to. He has a fabulous voice. But I don't think he has the time. He's filming, like, three television shows right now. But I did get to play with Gareth [David Lloyd, who plays Ianto Jones]. I played The Point [in Dublin] and he got up on stage and sang a Doors song with me, which was just fabulous. I think it was the highpoint of the evening.

Do you get recognised as Spike without the bleached hair?
Yeah.
Do you get tired of that?
I believe that celebrity is toxic to the human soul. I don't want to lose [my celebrity] but I have kept it at arm's length.
My fans are really great, they're very sensitive, they don't cross any boundaries, but at the same time I realise that I can't let their kind words affect me too much or I'll start to think I'm really cool - and as an artist you're going to lose your ability to be human if you start to think of yourself as a star. I mean, somebody flew in from another country yesterday just to stand on the street and watch the action. That is so good for the ego that you have to be careful…
What about Spike? It was left open whether the character was dead or not. Do you see yourself playing him again?
I'd love to. I told Joss [Whedon, Buffy creator] that he had seven years. He approached me about a movie at the end of Angel and I said, "Dude, I will follow you to the ends of the Earth. But you have seven years because my character's immortal and I am not." I'm ageing and Spike shouldn't. One of the cool things about vampires is they're immortal…
You seem to be a bit of an anglophile…?
It sounds weird but all the smart kids in my public school growing up were anglophiles. There's something about the language, I think. I don't know. Just a fantasy of another culture that might be smarter, and smart people in America hunger for smarter culture. The Italians developed opera, the French developed ballet and the English developed the language. As an actor, I can dance, but not that well, I can sing, but I'm no opera singer - but I can talk real well. So, Eng-land!
What have you been up to on your days off from Torchwood?
I do not have them. This is my one day off. I'm spending it with my girlfriend, Patricia, who is my secret weapon: we were doing a fight scene and all the fight crew were busy and I didn't have the political power to get them to stop doing what they were doing and help me. So I showed the fight moves to my girlfriend and she picked them up in one pass, dude! So we were backstage doing the moves, and when I was in front of the camera we got it real quick.
The same with lines - I show up better prepared for this role than any other in my life. Just because anything that I do with Patricia is real fun. So if we're doing lines or if we're cooking dinner - whatever it is - it's heaven. I just got a kiss for that - right on. |

Sembra che finalmente ci sia una fine alla follia.
Marsters stesso ha confermato che sarà davvero Piccolo "verde" nella sua recente intervista con TV Guide.
Guida TV: sei immerso in un grande sci-fi .
Potresti parlare del live-action di Dragonball?
Marsters: Dragonball è il più bel cartoon televisivo degli ultimi 50000 anni. Il suo unico difetto è che i personaggi femminili non sono tratti bene .Abbiamo intenzione di corregerlo nel film.
Io ho un senso shakespeariano del bene e del male
ci sono incredibili scene d'azione con personaggi di incredibile potenza.
sarà visivamente davvero emozionante. Mi è stato detto il bilancio è di circa $ 100 milioni.
guida tv: bello vedere tutto questo entusiasmo,tu chi sei??
Marsters: Lord Piccolo.
Ha migliaia di anni e da molto tempo era una forza del bene , ma è capitato in un contesto cattivo ed è stato messo in carcere per 2000 anni.
Questo l'ha fatto molto arrabbiare, trova un modo di scappare e distuggere il mondo.
La cosa piu figa e che, chi ha visto dragonball lo sa,
lord piccolo si trasforma nel personaggio chiamato Piccolo che è tutta una palla di cera....
Questo è uno dei personaggi piu popolari di tutta la serie.
Mi è stato detto che lavoro per gente che non mi lascerebbe vivere, se dassi troppe intormazioni....ma vi posso dire che il personaggio è verde, calvo e ha le orecchie a punta.
Eroico potrebbe non essere un termine sbagliato per la fine,,,,, ma è un lungo viaggio !!!! |

| Il sequel di Dragonball girato nel 2009? |

La seconda parte di DragonBall verrà girata nella primo quarto del 2009.
Una delle mie fonti è riuscita a parlare con uno dei costruttori che lavorano con la produzione di DB a Durango, e questa persona ha detto che la produzione gli ha assicurato che tutti e tre i film saranno girati a Durango, e che sicuramente lavorerà l'anno prossimo come fornitore per la produzione... Ha inoltre commentao che se le cose vanno bene, "DragonBall 2" potrebbe essere iniziato a girare nel primo quarto del 2009.
Questo è certamente qualcosa di buono per i fans e certamente per gli abitanti di Durango, se questo significherà che la trilogia sarà girata in questa città, il che avrebbe senso, dopo che è stato rivelato che alcuni dei set di DragonBall rimarranno a Durango anche dopo che il film verrà completato.
Ma dipenderà anche da quanti soldi farà al boxoffice e all'accettazione dei fans... Ma noi speriamo che vada tutto bene. |

Avremo sempre Spike in mente, ma il biondo succiasangue di Buffy non è l’unico personaggio Sci-fy in cui James Marsters ha affondato i denti. Marsters è felice di condividere il suo prossimo progetto con TV Guide, incluso il suo vistoso arrivo nella premiere della 2 stagione di Torchwood
Nella prima delle 2 parti, Marsters parlerà del suo passato selvaggio, del suo romantico presene e di alcuni ruoli futuri. La prossima settimana, nella 2 parte, parleremo del suo ritorno a Smalville.
TV Guide: Nel tuo ruolo da guest star in Torchwood interpeti uno spiritoso, arrapato furfante con un accento britannico. Non è un crossover con Buffy per cui, chi interpeti?
James Marsters: Il Capitano John è un Time Agent- un ladro che viaggia attraverso il tempo rubando le ricchezze di interi pianeti. Il suo partner era il Capitano Jack [il protagonista john barrowman], che ora si è riabilitato. Io mi faccio vedere in città perché lo rivoglio indietro per farlo tornare sulla cattiva strada e per farlo divertire con me.
TV Guide: Presto, jack e john fanno qualcosa che nemmeno spike ed angel non hanno mai fatto, giusto?
Marsters: No, no, no. Ci siamo baciati. Il mio personaggio è più che bisessuale. Spike era un romantico; questo tipo si farebbe qualsiasi cosa si muove. Ho gettato una lussuriosa occhiata ad un barboncino!
TV Guide: OK, così com’era il bacio con john barrowman?
Marsters: Non ho mai baciato un uomo prima, ma fortunatamente la mia ragazza, Patricia, era li, e mi ha detto che era sempre stata una sua fantasia che io baciassi un altro uomo. Probabilmente non lo farei nella vita reale, così lei venne sul set. Ha pensato che fosse veramente caldo. Stavo eccitando la mia ragazza- era tutto molto buono.
TV Guide: Chi è la tua ragazza?
Marsters: Posso dirti che è Patricia e che sta studiando designe e moda in Germania ora. È meravigliosa. Stiamo assieme da tre anni e mezzo.
TV Guide: Lei vive in Germania- e tu no. Com’è avere una relazione a lunga distanza?
Marsters: Fa schifo, specialmente perchè, come ho ditto, lei è fantastica e stare lontano da lei è molto difficile. E, allo stesso tempo, io sono così impegnato che se avessi una ragazza che pensasse che io sia disponibile per lei 7 giorni a settimana, avrei una ragazza molto frustrata ora.
TV Guide: Come sei finito in una serie sci-fi inglese?
Marsters: Ero In tour in UK- avevo rotto con la mia band, così eravamo solo io e la mia chitarra- e la mia tour manager, Lisa, mi ha fatto guardare Dr. Who. Ho pensato che fosse scritto molto bene e che sarebbe stato divertente parteciparvi. Così il mio agente chiamò Russel T. Davies, che ha scritto Queer as Folk ed è responsabile per Dr. Who. Russel disse di no, ma che avrebbe amato avermi in Torchwood, lo spin-off. E’ uno show divertente e sovversivo, come buffy. Mi sono sentito molto a casa.
TV Guide: Qual’è il tuo momento sovversivo preferito in buffy?
Marsters: Sono molto orgoglioso di quando avemmo un ragazzo nel campanile con un fucile subito dopo Clumbine, e specialmente della relazione fra WIllow e Tara. Questo fu un grande colpo, e joss [whedon] ebbe molta pressione per questo. Per il duo credito, non ne ebbe e diede a molte lesbiche qualcosa su cui sentirsi bene. E’ una delle migliori cose a cui ho partecipato.
TV Guide: Così lo spin-off us spike è assolutamente morto ora?
Marsters: Non penso sia assolutmente morto. Ho detto a joss che non volevo fare un vampiro vecchio che sarebbe veramente brutto. [risate] Ma mi sto mantenendo meglio di come pensavo. Con le luci rosse, magari potremmo riuscirci.
TV Guide: Come era sul set di Torchwood? Più sopracciglia alte dei soliti set americani?
Marsters: [risate] Per un non iniziato, può essere un po uno shock. E’ uno show molto carico di sessualità, ci sono molti scherzetti a sfondo sessuale e molti doppisensi nell’aria, ma nessuno di questi è serio. Dopo le prime 4 ore, stavo dicendo cose che facevano arrossire John. Gli ho detto “amico, non dovevi provocare. Ti avevo detto che sono più ‘perverso’ di te”.
TV Guide: Tornerai + tardi nella stagione, ma ci sarai nella prossima?
Marsters: Mi piacerebbe. Il personaggio è sexy e cattivo. Perché smettere di farlo? In più il Galles è fantastico. Se qualcuno vuole fare una bella vacanza e non pensa ai gabbiani, vada in Galles.
TV Guide: Non hai scritto alcune canzioni del tuo nuovo album, like a waterfall, qui?
Marsters: Ho finito 3 canzoni e lavorato su altre. Ho passato dei bei tempi. Sfortunatmente, quando sono tornado x girare l’ultimo episodio, avevo una mano rotta e non potevo suonare la chitarra.
TV Guide: Come ti sei rotto la mano?
Marsters: Um, ero in canada. E per ragioni di cortesia professionale, penso che non dirò altro oltre a questo.
TV Guide: Sei stato coivolto in una rissa con un attore sul set di Smallville?
Marsters: No, non sono stato coinvolto in una rissa da circa… 12 anni. Sono un bravo ragazzo ora, non dirlo troppo in giro però.
TV Guide: Quando sei stato cattivo?
Marsters: Quando sono stato buttato fuori dal college, ero diventato molto selvaggio per un paio d’anni. Il rettore della Julliard disse [in accento britannico] “Dovreti fermarti prima che rimani deluso. Non ce la farai mai. Vattene ora.” Non sono deluso perchè l’ho fatto bene. Ma subito dopo, mi aveva fatto male e questo ha dato inizio a un periodo buio- un molto divertente periodo buio.
TV Guide: Hai recentemente pubblicato Like a Waterfall sul tuo sito. Come descriveresti la tua musica?
Marsters: Dovrebbe essere folk- e blues- con un pizzico di punk e pop e rock. Cè anche un tocco di Joni Mitchell e jazz. Abbiamo avuto il chitarrista Ben Peeler dei Wallflowers a suonare. Molte delle canzoni sono ispirate o dedicate direttamente alla mia ragazza. Volevo chiamare l’album come lei. Ma ho deciso di essere un po’ più discreto. Lei ha dei capelli molto carini che cadono come una cascata lungo le sue spalle.
TV Guide: Sei stato sposato. Hai figli?
Marsters: un figlio parlare molto di questo, ma si, ho un figlio e mi prendo cura di mia nipote. Sono così orgoglioso di loro.
James Marsters parla di successo, famiglia e vita dopo i 40 anni
Nella prima parte della nostra intervista James Marsters ha parlato della sua vita amorosa e del suo provocante nuovo ruolo in torchwood. Qui, ha parlato del suo ritorno a smallville, il suo ruolo principale nel film Dragonball e perché interpreta cattivi e non vuole essere famoso.
TV Guide: Ritorni a Smallville per un paio di episodi. Qual’è il meglio nel interpretare Brainiac? E’ certamente affascinante, ma non sexy come il Capitano John di Torchwood.
James Marsters:[risate] Mi è piaciuto molto lavorare con il cast, e ho amato lavorare nella 5 stagione quando il pubblico non sapeva perché io ero li. E’ stato carinamente delizioso.
TV Guide: Quando Braniac è stato proposto come il professore di storia Milton Fine?
Marsters: Si. Io ho preteso di curarmi delle sensazioni di clak, ed è stato bello perché a me non me ne importava poi molto; Io volevo solo che lui fosse il mio strumento. Ha come preso a calci il mio sedere.
TV Guide: L’ultima volta che abbiamo visto Braniac, non era ridotto ala sua vera forma nera e liquida?
Marsters: Ero pieno di lavoro e non potevo tornare, così ero sulla strada di chiudere la porta. Poi Al Gough [il produttore esecutivo] mi chiamò all’inizio della stagione e mi chiese se ero disponibile. Fortunatamente, avevo un po di tempo.
TV Guide: Cos’hai con le creature cattive?
Marsters: Lui va da provare a governare il mondo a provare a sopravvivere, ritrovandosi un vagabondo, scaldandosi le mani sul fuoco all’aperto, Il mio guardaroba è più bello, e devo mangiare un topo. Presumo che tornerà presto con le sue macchinazioni e a rendere dura la vita a clark. La cosa favolosa cìè che ho lavorato con Marc McClure, che ha interpretato Jimmy Olsen nel Film Superman con Christopher Reeve. Lui interpreta uno scienziato. E posso dire che probabilmente è un buon scienziato.
TV Guide: Sei pronto a fare un'altra serie a tempo pieno?
Marsters: Certo. Amo lavorare. Quando ero un bambino, volevo invitare i miei amici a giocare, poi volevo prenderli oltre a un piano di riciclo e noi trasportavamo vetri tutto il giorno. Loro mi odiavano per questo, ma io pensavo fosse divertente. Amo sudare.
TV Guide: E’ uno dei motive per cui fai sci-fi- duro lavoro e molto sudore?
Marsters: Una delle ragioni. Ma sai, molti degli scrittori di Buffy sono oggi nei migliori show in circolazione- grey’s anatomy, 24. E tutti hanno le stesse lamentele: “Questo è fantastico, ma voglio avere un grande demone che salta fuori da una crepa e succhia qualcuno in un interessante universo.” Io sono tipo, “Sei su 24 amico. Non può esserci sempre una guerra nucleare!” e lui “Già, è noioso. Sono bloccato nella realtà!”
TV Guide: Ti tufferai in una grande futuro sci-fi prossimamente. Puoi parlarci di DragonBall?
Marsters: Dragonball è il migliore cartoon degli ultimi 50000 anni. La sua unica debolezza è che i personaggi femminili non sono disegnati molto bene- ma noi sistemeremo questo nel film. Ha un senso sheakespireano del bene e del male e ci sono scene d’azione incredibili con i personaggi che hanno poteri incredibili. Sarà visivamente eccitante. Mi è stato detto che il budget si aggira sui 100 milioni di $.
TV Guide: E’ bello vedere che ne sei entusiasta. Chi interpreterai?
Marsters: Lord Piccolo. Lui ha migliaia di anni e moltissimo tempo fa era una forza del bene ma finì in mezzo a una cattiva disputa e venne imprigionato per 2000 anni. Questo l’ha fatto molto arrabbiare, ed ha trovato il modo di scappare ed ha provato a distruggere il mondo. La cosa + interessante è che nessuno di quelli che ha visto Dragonball sa che Lord Piccolo si è trasformato in Piccolo, e questo è una diversa palla di cera. Questo è uno dei personaggi principali dell’intera serie. Ho saputo che lavoro x persone che mi scorticherebbero vivo se do troppe informazioni, ma quello che posso dirvi è che il personaggio è verde, calvo e ha orecchie a punta. Eroico non è sbagliato alla fine, ma è un lungo viaggio.
TV Guide: Dal lato opposto, non stai interpretando l’omicida seriale Ted Bundy nella mini-serie La Cattura del Killer di Green River (The Capture of the Green River Killer) del Lifetime Movie Network?
Marsters: John Pielmeier, un uomo meraviglioso che ha vinto un Tony Award per Agnes of God e con cui ho lavorato a Seattle negli anni ’90, mi ha chiamato dicendomi che stava facendo questo drama e non aveva nessun buon Ted Bundy, ed io potevo andare li e girare. Tutti hanno detto che ero molto pauroso. Loro mi hanno sistemato i capelli in quella forma e mi han messo il costume e poi il registra è entrato nella mia roulotte e disse “OMG sembri proprio Ted Bundy.” Va a farti friggere! Non voglio sentire questo.
TV Guide: Tornerai a fare l’agente federale (il Det. Grant Mars) in Senza Traccia?
Marsters: Ero stato ingaggiato per fare 5 episodi e pensavo che fosse finita li, poi ho avuto DragonBall, e loro sono sembrati un po’ scocciati che io non fossi più disponibile, il che fu sia una sorpresa che una specie di compliment. Il mio personaggio non è morto o non ha ucciso nessuno, così penso che potrei tornare. E’ un bellissimo show in cui lavorare; tutti sono al massimo.
TV Guide: La maggior parte di noi ti conosce grazie a Buffy, ma non hai recitato per anni prima di questo?
Marsters: Oh, mio dio, si. Ho fatto 100 opere teatrali prima di quello. Non ho mai voluto diventare veramente famoso. Ne ho avuto un assaggio alle superiori, In una conferenza degli studenti d’arte drammatica, sono stato scelto per interpretare Gesù in Godspell e improvvisamente era come se fossi uno degli Who o degli [rolling] Stones. Le ragazze avrebbero voluto esplodere nel bagno per provare a vedere il mio pene! La fama non sembra così divertente. Sono arrivato al teatro- avevo il mio teatro a Seattle ed era fantastico. Ma, alla nascita di mio figlio, ho iniziato a sentire questa voce dirmi “Va a fare i soldi, James Marsters. Va a sud ora. Tuo figlio non ha deciso di essere povero. Lui non sarà felice di dormire nel retro del teatro come stai facendo tu ora”.
TV Guide: Ed il resto è storia televisiva. E’ vero che, qualche anno fa, in Inghilterra ti hanno votato assieme a Keira Knightley come gli attori che vorrebbero vedere nelle vesti di Romeo e Giulietta? Hai battuto Leonardo DiCaprio e Orlando Bloom!
Marsters: E’ vero. Oltreoceano Buffy ha avuto più successo che in America. I personaggi hanno anche i loro francobolli in uno degli stati dell’unione sovietica. Ma era carino da sentire. Io ho ovviamente detto, ok lo faccio, ma Keira non ha voluto commentare. [risate]
TV Guide: Così la vita dopo i 40 non sembra male, o no?
Marsters: Yeah. I quaranta non sono male! Penso con il mio cervello ora, che è molto più chiaro, e le donne sembrano apprezzarlo. E’ una decade fantastica dove tu riesci a controllare te stesso ma le donne sono comunque interessate. |
